As you may have seen, the Bay Bridge span on the side of the original is nearly complete. With plans being made to have the new span finished by 2013 the old Bay Bridge will be shutting down once the new span has opened and a steady traffic flow is seen. The old bridge will not be blown to pieces but will be dismantled at not either end of the span, but with the cantilever section because it sits in the way of both the bicycle path and a new eastbound on-ramp from Treasure Island. The entire project is expected to cost $239 million and should be finished in two years. My personal reaction to this is that if possible they should have both bridges opened so it can ease the flow of traffic. Plus the old bridge is historical to the Bay Area. I believe it can be repaired in some kind of way.
